Do you have a hard time finding the right words to praise God? Our human words can feel so inadequate.
But God has given us a solution for that! We have all of Scripture that we can use to praise Him. We have God-approved words that we can speak back to God.
In his book, Psalms, The Prayer Book of the Bible, Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, “The words which come from God become, then, the steps on which we find our way to God.”
The book of Psalms is a book of prayers and songs that the Hebrews used for worshipping God. We can still use this book today. I love the closing verse that ends the book of Psalms, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” (150:6).
If you have breath, if you have words coming out of your mouth, you should be using them for praising God! In our prayers, in our singing, and in our speaking.
Praising God will make you more holy than practicing any of the following: sarcasm, cynicism, people-pleasing, judgement, pride, swearing, telling jokes, yelling at your kids, lying, and all the other things that come out of our mouths.
Here are three Psalms that you can use to praise God right now, while it is still called today. There is no reason to wait! “Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms” (Psalm 95:2).
Psalm 8
“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
This last two Psalms mention God in the third person. You can change up the words to make it a prayer to God. For example, “Your law is perfect, refreshing the soul. Your statutes are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”
Psalm 19:7-9
“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.”
Psalm 145:3-7
“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.
One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.
They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
They tell of the power of your awesome works—and I will proclaim your great deeds.
They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.”
