This post is for Five Minute Friday, a community of writers who use a one-word prompt to write for five minutes with no planning or editing. Today’s word is “purpose.”
I recently lead a discussion on purpose, and our discussion was based off of the book of Esther. What led Esther to have confidence? It was her decision to partner with God by trusting in her purpose.
When Mordecai first tells Esther about the Jews being ordered to die, her first response is “If I go to the king, I could die.” She’s afraid, and rightfully so.
But a few sentences later, she states, “If I perish, I perish.”
What changed in just a couple verses? It was Mordecai’s reminder that God is working here, even in this place where we don’t say His name, where no one is singing His praises. Even here God is still working.
“Perhaps, you were made for such a time as this.”
That iconic verse was the reminder Esther needed. That maybe she wasn’t queen by chance, but by God’s hand. God’s still here and working, do you want to partner with him, Esther?
Esther decided that she did want to partner with God. The purpose and partnership with God gave her confidence.
Your purpose can give you confidence. But it also takes courage to believe in your purpose.
It takes faith to believe that God is here and working even if you don’t see Him.
It takes trust to believe that God is working through you and for you.
It takes hope to believe that you can make a difference.
Esther’s situation turned from helpless to hopeful when she was reminded that God was near.
God is near. How can you partner with Him today? As a spouse, as a parent, as a neighbor and friend, as a citizen of your town, and as a scroller on social media, how can you shine like a light in the darkness?
Partner with God by trusting in your purpose.

IF Esther didn’t know it when she entered the palace – she sure knew it in short order!

There are those who look at me
and say I’m out of luck,
that cancer took my dignity
and that God’s purpose sucks.
They say I have been left behind
in life’s Bohemian dance,
but I can’t say I really mind
for now I’m not entranced
by mirages of tomorrow,
dreams that float in air.
I put aside both greed and sorrow
to live and die without a care
for cancer’s helped me understand
that I’m now and always in God’s hand.
