We assume that when we move into a neighborhood, the neighbors will just adopt us and we’ll be like old friends just showing up at each other’s houses unannounced. Because that’s how it happens in the shows, right?!

When it doesn’t happen, we think something is wrong with us. We think community happens naturally for others while we’re winging it all on our own.

But the truth is village building takes intention, courage, time, patience, and all the prayers.

Have you ever tried to write your own Psalm? I flipped a few pages into this now full journal and found these words inspired by the 23rd Psalm. I started with “Lord you are my...” and this is what it became:

Lord you are my initiator...

You spur me on when I feel weary.
You give me courage when I feel afraid.
You push me into action when I feel sluggish.
You give me hope when I only see destruction.
You give me rest when my days are long and busy.
You give me peace when my mind is scattered.
I will depend on you all the days of my life.

Let it be so.

I find that the more I isolate myself from others, the more distant God feels.

Though I enjoy solitude and one on one time with God, I can’t deny I see God’s love in the people around me.

We’ve got it backwards if we’re serving others

We’ve got it backwards if we’re serving others hoping they’ll appreciate it, love it, then love us in return.

The love and approval we hope to receive from others may rarely be what we expect it to be. It’s conditional, temperamental, and based on their mood or ability that day.

But God’s love is constant. When we rest in His love before we show up for others, we feel the good pleasure of partnering with God to give hope to the world—we’re not doing it based on how we think the person will react, but based on what is pleasing to God.

Let the love He lavishes on you equip you to go and love others🌷
